HonkIP

Help / Troubleshooting

I can reach my name but not my camera or NAS

Your HonkIP name gets you to your home's front door, which is your router. The router then decides which device inside, if any, the visitor is allowed to reach. By default it lets nothing in, which is a good thing.

To reach one device, you tell the router: "connections arriving on this port go to this device." That's port forwarding (see Port forwarding explained).

Checklist:

  1. Is the device on? Can you open it from inside your home on its local address (like 192.168.1.50)?
  2. Is there a port forward on your router for that device and its port?
  3. Are you testing from outside? Many routers won't let you use your own public name from inside your home. Test from your phone on mobile data, with Wi-Fi off.
  4. Use our check: on My home, press Can I reach it from outside? and enter the port.
  5. Still closed? Your provider may share one address between many homes (CGNAT). See CGNAT explained.

Still stuck? Email support@swearguard.com and tell us your HonkIP name and what you tried.
