Plain answers to common questions.
What does HonkIP do?
Most homes get an internet address that changes from time to time. HonkIP gives your home a name, like smith.honkip.com, and keeps it pointing at the right address. Type the name anywhere to reach things at home.
How does it know my address?
Your router, a PC at home or a small script tells us whenever the address changes. Set it up once on the Setup page.
Which routers work?
Any router where you can type your own Dynamic DNS server or update link. The Setup page has step-by-step guides, with your key already filled in, for FRITZ!Box, UniFi, MikroTik, pfSense, OPNsense, OpenWrt, DD-WRT and ASUS Merlin, plus Synology and QNAP NAS, Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi and Docker.
My router only lists No-IP and DynDNS
Many TP-Link, Netgear and standard ASUS routers, and most routers from internet providers, only offer a fixed list. Let another device at home do the job instead: a NAS, a Raspberry Pi or a PC that is usually on. It takes one line to set up.
Do I need to confirm my name every month?
No. Your free name stays yours as long as your router keeps updating it.
Can I use my own domain?
Yes, in three ways, all on the Domains page:
- Buy one here. It works straight away, on every plan.
- Link the whole domain you already own (Plus and Pro). At your domain seller, change the name servers to ns1.honkip.com, ns2.honkip.com and ns3.honkip.com, then press Check. yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com then reach your home, and you can add names like cameras.yourdomain.com.
- Link just one name, like home.yourdomain.com (Plus and Pro). Add one CNAME record at your domain seller, then press Check. Choose this if the domain already has a website or email, since nothing else on it changes.
Where do I change name servers or add a record?
Sign in where you bought the domain, for example GoDaddy, Namecheap, Dynadot, Afrihost or Xneelo, open the domain, and look for Name servers or DNS. Changes usually show up within an hour, sometimes longer.
What's a wildcard name?
With a wildcard on smith.honkip.com, any name under it, like plex.smith.honkip.com or photos.smith.honkip.com, goes to your home without adding each one. It's useful when one server at home runs several apps behind a reverse proxy. Turn wildcards on or off on My home (Plus and Pro).
Can I get an HTTPS certificate for my home server?
Yes, free, from Let's Encrypt, for your name and everything under it (like cameras.smith.honkip.com). Go to Setup → HTTPS certificates and pick certbot or acme.sh. It works even when your internet provider blocks incoming web traffic. For other tools, the update link takes txt=VALUE to set the check value and clear=true to remove it.
I can reach the name but not my camera
The name finds your home. Your router also needs to let the connection through to the camera, usually called port forwarding. Your camera's guide shows which port to open. Then use Can I reach it from outside? on My home to check it works.
