What is HonkIP?
Your home's internet address keeps changing. HonkIP gives it a name that doesn't.
Every home connection has an internet address, a string of numbers like 102.65.xx.xx. That's how the rest of the internet finds your home. The catch: most internet providers change that address now and then, after a power cut, a router restart, or just because. One day your camera is at 102.65.14.201, the next it's somewhere else, and the app on your phone can't find it.
HonkIP fixes that. You pick a name, like smith.honkip.com, and we keep it pointing at your home's current address. When the address changes, your name follows it within seconds. You only ever need to remember the name.
| Without HonkIP | With HonkIP |
|---|---|
| 102.65.14.201 today, something different next week | smith.honkip.com, always |
| Look up the new address every time it changes | Nothing to look up |
| Apps and bookmarks break | Apps and bookmarks keep working |
What can I do with it?
- Check your cameras from your phone at work or on holiday.
- Open your NAS or home storage to grab a file you forgot.
- Run a game server (Minecraft and friends) that your mates can join with an easy name.
- Reach your smart home: lights, alarm panel, solar inverter or home dashboard.
- Work on your home lab: a Raspberry Pi, a test server, a home media library.
How it works, in 3 steps
- Pick your free name. Something like smith.honkip.com. It's yours as long as you use it.
- Tell your router (or a device at home). Your router, NAS, PC or Raspberry Pi tells HonkIP whenever your address changes. Our guides fill in your details for you.
- Use your name from anywhere. Type it on your phone or laptop and it lands at home, even after your address changes.
Good to know
- The free plan is free forever for one name. No card, and no monthly "are you still there?" emails.
- Works with both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
- HonkIP finds your home. Your router still decides what's allowed in, so for a camera or server you'll usually also set up port forwarding (we explain it in plain English).
- Run by GooseLabs in South Africa. We never sell your data.
