Glossary: IP address, hostname, DNS, port, update key
- IP address
- The numbers that find your home on the internet, like 102.65.14.201. Most providers change it now and then.
- Hostname
- A name for an address, like smith.honkip.com. Easier to remember than numbers, and HonkIP keeps it pointing at the right ones.
- DNS
- The internet's phone book. It turns names into addresses. HonkIP runs the part of the phone book for your name.
- Port
- A numbered door on your router. Each app uses its own, like 25565 for Minecraft or 443 for secure websites.
- Port forwarding
- A rule on your router that sends one port to one device inside your home.
- Update key
- The password your router or app uses to tell HonkIP your new address. Not your account password.
- IPv4 and IPv6
- The old and new kinds of internet address. HonkIP works with both.
- CGNAT
- When your provider shares one address between many homes, so nothing outside can reach yours.
